What is a Snowflake ID?

A Snowflake ID is the 64-bit number X gives each post and account. Its top 41 bits are the moment it was made, in milliseconds since X’s epoch.

X has used them since November 2010; its epoch is 4 November 2010 at 01:42:54.657 UTC. Shift the id right by 22 bits and add the epoch: that is when the post was made. The lower bits say which machine made the id, so two ids made in the same millisecond still differ.

Other services use the same idea with their own epoch. Posts from before November 2010 have plain counting ids with no time in them.
